James “Jim” H. Reid, Jr.
James H. Reid, Jr was appointed as Fire Marshal and Fire Official on April 6, 2015. Reid’s duties include overseeing inspections, investigations, plans review, fire safety education and community risk reduction efforts.
Chief Reid worked 27 years for the Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office assigned to the Central Region and Headquarters Offices, one year as a Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal with the Hopewell Bureau of Fire before joining Petersburg Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services. Reid serves as a Captain (VA) rising from enlisted to warrant before receiving his commission in the Virginia Department of Military Affairs (Army) and serves as State Training Director and serves on several committees for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).
Chief Reid has a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bluefield College, Bachelors of Science from Kennedy-Western in Safety Engineering and is a graduate of the National Defense University, Joint Forces Staff College. Reid also completed the Fire Science at J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College and Police Science at John Tyler Community College.
In addition, Reid holds certifications including Certified Building and Certified Fire Official, Firefighter, Hazardous Materials, Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator to include Law Enforcement, Advanced Professional Series for Emergency Managers, Emergency Management Instructor Certification, Master Military Emergency Management Specialist, Emergency Medical Technician as well has obtained Chief Fire Officer Designation (CFO) and Fire Marshal Designation (FM) bestowed by the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
Jim has two grown children: Christin (Joey), James L. “Jake” and two grandchildren Haleigh and Will. Jim’s enjoys supporting his athletic grandkids and fishing on his off time.
