[ARCHIVED] Petersburg Welcomes New York Times Bestselling Author

In commemoration of the 150th Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the Department of Cultural Affairs, Arts and Tourism, in partnership with the Petersburg Public Library, is sponsoring a book signing by New York Times bestselling author Karen Abbott at the Petersburg Public Library on Wednesday, November 12 at 6 pm. The Petersburg Public Library is located at 201 West Washington Street.

LIAR, TEMPTRESS, SOLDIER, SPY, is a spellbinding book of historical restoration, recounts the courage and audacious duplicity of four remarkable women who played seminal roles in the Civil War. Abbott, who draws on a wealth of primary source material as well as interviews with the women’s descendants, illuminates these interwoven lives with the assured hand of an historian and the narrative grace of a novelist.

As the surprising fates of these women play out against the intensely drawn backdrop of the violence and deprivations of war, Abbott offers a new perspective on this crucial turning point in American history—one that restores the role of women to its proper place. She reveals, says New York Times bestselling biographer Michael Korda, “in such vivid detail the extraordinary lives of women who involved themselves so dangerously in the Civil War. This is that rare work of history that reads like a novel—and a really good one at that—and in which the truth is more thrilling than fiction.” “Karen Abbott’s powerful narrative is first rate American history about a fascinating, little-known chapter of the Civil War, as well as a compulsive, thrilling saga of espionage,” adds Gilbert King, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Devil in the Grove. “Brilliant storytelling, highly accessible, and impossible to put down.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

She also contributes to Smithsonian magazine’s history blog, Past Imperfect, and writes for Disunion, the New York Times series about the Civil War. She lives with her husband and two African Grey parrots, Poe and Dexter.
