This April, Petersburg Sheriff Vanessa Crawford was selected as the winner of the Remarkable Woman contest by 8News. Carefully chosen from more than 230 nominations, Sheriff Crawford is now the second winner of this award and the first from Petersburg.
In December, nominations were accepted from viewers across Central Virginia in an effort to recognize women who are making a difference in self achievement, community contribution, and family impact.
“I’m honored and very blessed that I was selected,” said Sheriff Crawford.
A panel of five judges read and scored each essay. The four nominees with the highest scores were featured in 8news newscasts. Sheriff Crawford received the highest score.
“We are honored to recognize outstanding women in our communities,” said Steve Bays, ABC8 Promotions Manager. “We congratulate Sheriff Vanessa Crawford and are grateful for her dedication to Central Virginia.”
In her interview with ABC8, Sheriff Crawford leaves young girls with the following piece of advice, “If you have a dream, an aspiration, an idea of what you want to do…regardless of what it is, go for it. Continue to break glass ceilings.”
As the winner, Sheriff Crawford was awarded a $1,000 check to donate to her charity of choice. Sheriff Crawford presented this check to the Alzheimer’s Association.
