[ARCHIVED] Petersburg Recognizes September as National Preparedness Month

The City’s Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Service (FRES) is participating in the national Ready campaign in September 2014 for National Preparedness Month (NPM). The 2014 NPM theme is “Be Disaster Aware, Take Action to Prepare”.

“Being prepared for an emergency is a shared responsibility.” said William E. Johnson, City Manager. “It takes the whole community working together to effectively prepare for, respond to and recover from any emergency and disaster. Through the city website’s Notify Me feature residents and anyone interested can sign up for this feature to receive emergency alerts, updates and general information from the city.”

Throughout the month of September the City’s FRES will have an outreach campaign in the community to help with emergency preparedness. Each week there will be a different theme and information will be posted on the website.

The Ready Campaign established four universal building blocks of emergency preparedness: Be informed, Make a Plan, Build a Kit, and Get Involved. September 30 has been designated as America’s PrepareAthon! Day. To sign up, go to www.ready.gov/prepare and register how you will take action to prepare in September. Residents are also encouraged to sign up for the Ready Virginia Mobile App to prepare for an emergency using interactive tools.
