PETERSBURG LIBRARY FOUNDATION KICKS OFF PHASE 2

Petersburg, Va. -- The Petersburg Library Foundation will build a Conference/Event Center, announced Robert C. Walker, Chairman of the Petersburg Library Foundation.

The Conference/Event Center will accommodate corporate, civic, educational, community, and similar groups – as well as individuals – in a 6,472 square foot addition to the existing building. “This is a void in the city that we’ve had for a long time. We have never had a facility that provides the much needed space and accessibility for our citizens in Petersburg. This has been a long time coming,” stated Mayor Sam Parham.

The Event Conference Center will:

  • Create flexible meeting spaces that can accommodate up to 375 people auditorium style and 200 people banquet style. To accommodate the different room setup, it will have movable chairs and tables, a stage, dressing rooms, and a conference room;
  • Provide approximately 35 additional parking spaces to support the new Conference/Event Center;
  • Have energy-efficient LED lighting;
  • Expand the Wellness Center so that larger audiences for health-related programs can be accommodated;
  • Offer opportunities for special events, corporate events, annual general meetings, workshops and training session, educational competitions, children’s celebrations, and civic, Greek, and local social club meetings.

The project will cost a total of $2.5 million. The Library has already secured commitments totaling $800,000 from the City of Petersburg, The Cameron Foundation, the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation, and other donors. Additional request for support are needed to match $500,000 in challenge grants. Amy P. Nisenson, Executive Director of the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation states, “The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation is pleased to take a leadership role in the creation of the Petersburg Public Library Conference/Event Center”.

In 2014, the Petersburg Public Library opened its award-winning, LEED-certified building at 201 W. Washington St. at a cost $12.7 million. In just five years, the Library has become the center of Petersburg’s cultural, educational and social life, welcoming 116,327 visitors of all ages during 2018. “The Petersburg Public Library is a community hub. With this addition we believe the Library will have an even deeper reach in serving the community”, stated J. Todd Graham, President of The Cameron Foundation.

All donations should be made payable to the Petersburg Library Foundation, P.O. Box 3435, Petersburg, VA 23805. For more information on the Foundation or naming opportunities call (804) 733-2387 ext. 6101 or visit www.petersburglibraryfoundation.org.
