Petersburg City Council Unanimously Approves Resolution to Advance Destination Resort Project
In a unanimous decision, Petersburg City Council has approved a resolution signaling the next phase in advancing a Destination Resort project. The resolution paves the way for a Request for Proposal (RFP) issued on Monday, February 12 (https://mvendor.cgieva.com/Vendor/public/IVDetails.jsp?PageTitle=SO%20Details&rfp_id_lot=58853&rfp_id_round=0) inviting proposals from developers and casino operators for the comprehensive economic development project, including a destination resort, real estate development, retail, event venue, and casino.
City Council's resolution also emphasizes Petersburg's commitment to openly evaluate potential developers and casino operators and the uses of revenues generated by the project, including education, infrastructure, health, recreation, public safety, parks, and other community wealth-building initiatives. The City will hold meetings for community participation in the process.
This major development follows the recent approval of SB628 by the Senate of the Virginia General Assembly on Friday, February 9, which designates Petersburg as an “eligible host city” for casino gaming. The legislation grants Petersburg residents the right to vote via a referendum, for this major economic development opportunity for the City. The bill now moves to the House in the General Assembly for approval.
Senator Lashrecse Aird, the bill's Chief Patron alongside Senator Louise Lucas, has played a pivotal role in advocating for Petersburg's inclusion as a host city in General Assembly legislation. This legislative milestone reflects the collaborative efforts between Petersburg officials and Senator Aird in advancing the bill and encouraging community engagement and support.
